Calgary Real Estate
Calgary: History
There is a lot of history in the Calgary area. Native Canadians have lived here for thousands of years. The settlement that became known as Calgary was originally a RCMP fort named "Fort Calgary" in 1876 which was built to stem the flow of U.S. whiskey trading. The name "Calgary" is originally from the settlement on the Isle of Mull, Scotland and is hypothesized to come from two Norwegian words, "kald" and "gart", meaning respectively "cold" and "garden". The Canadian Pacific Railway made Calgary into a centre for commerce, agriculture and transportation. The CPA's headquarters are still located in Calgary.
Calgary: Real Estate
Calgary has experienced a boom in real estate, which has been the impetus for developing some new and exciting single family home neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city. Condos and townhome developments can be found all over the city, with the majority of them being located in and near the city centre. Calgary homes fall into four large quadrants, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest and from there into many smaller communities.
Calgary: Careers
Calgary is the place to go if you want to jump start your career. Significant labour shortages have made this city a hot place for people who want to work and earn top dollar in their field. While the oil and gas industry doesn't overshadow Calgary's economy to the point that it once did, it is still the city's main source of income. Other large employers include Shaw Communications, NOVA Chemicals, Telus, Nexen, CNRL, Shell Canada, and Dow Chemical Canada. Steady growth means that this city is going to have a demand for skilled workers in all fields for many years to come.
Calgary: Transportation
Calgary has many options for transportation within its bounds. Major arterial routes make most Calgary homes within a short drive of the downtown core. Other options include the Calgary C-Train and Calgary Transit's bus system. For cyclists, there are over 260 km of bikeways on city streets. Walkers, runners, cyclists and winter skiers also are able to take advantage of the multi-use pathways that collectively span over 635 km to get virtually anywhere in the city.
Calgary: Schools
There are over 300 schools in the Calgary area. Approximately 215 of these are run by the Calgary Board of Education and 95 are run by the Calgary Catholic School District. There are also a number of schools that focus on special needs students. There are many private schools in the area as well. The National Sport School is unique in that it is the first high school in Canada geared specifically towards athletes of Olympic calibre.
There are a number of post-secondary education facilities in Calgary. The University of Calgary is the largest of these, but there are a number of significant institutions outside of UC that offer exceptional learning opportunities, such as Mount Royal College, SAIT Polytechnic, Bow Valley College and the Alberta College of Art and Design. There are also several private liberal arts colleges in the area that offer a variety of programs.
Calgary: Shopping, Dining & Recreation
There are many shopping centres, stand alone shops and restaurants in the Calgary area. The city's ethnic diversity has produced a variety of dining establishments that offer a variety of culinary experiences. There are many parks and nature preseves in Calgary, the most notable being Nose Hill Park and Fish Creek Provincial Park. The Bow River is a popular fishing area. A variety of annual festivals and events make Calgary an interesting place to be at all times of the year, but the major draw is the Calgary Stampede, a 10 day rodeo held in July.
