First developed as a small railway village in 1889, Airdrie was named after a town in Scotland and it was hoped that the community would grow with the arrival of railway workers and their families. Indeed the small village grew into a bustling city and Airdrie is growing in size and stature as the years go by. There are about 40 communities in Airdrie, some quite established and some newer. Visitors to the mall will discover that it has been separated into recognizable "neighborhoods" such as the Fashion Neighborhood, the Ranch Neighborhood and the interesting Resources Neighborhood which celebrates the diversity of Alberta’s numerous resources including wind, oil and gas. On top of the many great stores to browse, CrossIron Mills Mall has several restaurants, cafes and a food court for a top-notch dining experience. The mall also has a fabulous cinema complex to keep visitors well entertained during their stay in Airdrie.
